EEb Bass Dominic McIver
Dominic started playing trumpet when he was 13. By 16 he had progressed onto BBb bass and joined the Blackburn and Darwen Junior Band. Whilst at college he still managed to play trumpet in their swing band even though he was playing BBb bass. Dominic taught himself how to read bass clef for tuba which is quite a feat considering he plays BBb. After 6 months in the junior band Dominic progressed up to the TDS band which became the ‘B’ Band and eventually Darwen Brass. At the tender age of 19 Dominic joined the Lancashire Youth Brass Band under the direction of Peter Reid which was a huge learning experience for him especially when Les Beavers was running the training weekends.
When he went to university he joined their orchestra but had no tuba to play so he taught himself to play trombone. Whilst at university he played for many swing bands, orchestras and pit orchestras to earn a bit of beer money. After leaving university Dominic continued playing with the Blackburn and Darwen ‘B’ Band and was one of the founders of Darwen Brass. Dominic has even had a go at wagging the stick when he ran his own brass quintet which had 6 players and was aptly named Hexentric Brass.
