Our Solo Euphonium - Dave Thomas

I have tried to be musical all my life from a very early beginning at the age of 6 yrs. I went to Bury Salvation Army in the Manchester Division and joined the band.

When I was 11, I left Bury Salvation Army and joined Bury Silver band for 3 years.

At the age of 14, I joined Irwell Forge band for 6 months, and then at the age of 17, I transferred to Stacksteads.

I have never found out if it was myself that could not settle or the bands that were glad that I left.

After a few years, I then rotated my talents between Whitworth and Blackburnand Darwen for quite a long time.

Some 4 years ago I joined Darwen Brass on its formation and instead of moving bands I now just move instruments but stay with Darwen Brass where I am at present the Solo Euphonium player (teeth permitting). I have just had them all removed. That is my excuse for the wrong notes and wrong pitching.

Many years ago, whilst I was still a young musician I had the privilege to learn under the directorship of Len Withington.

Whether he still remembers me or is as proud of that fact as I am, I do not know and I have no intention to ask him.
