Matt Haworth - 2nd. trombone

Matt (or Matty Boy to our MD) began playing the trombone, against his will, at the age of 11 at secondary school. He soon started to enjoy playing when he began lessons with Dave Little who taught him through to grade 8 where Matt gained a distinction.

Matt, after a wrong turn on the M62, found himself studying at the Leeds College of Music where Hallé Orchestra trombone legend Neville Roberts was his teacher. During his time in Leeds, Matt performed with local orchestras, big bands and brass ensembles and gave solo recitals. He was principal trombone of the LCM Symphony Orchestra for three years and performed as soloist in three concerto performances with college ensembles including Rimsky-Korsakov's and Grondahl's trombone concertos. Matt Graduated in 2001 winning the College's prize for Orchestral Brass.

Matt also studied conducting under, John Anderson, former Musical Director of the Grimethorpe Colliery Band. It was with the Leeds City Concert band that he was assistant to the musical director for two years. In 2004 Matt was invited as guest soloist to play Rimsky-Korsakov's trombone concerto with the City of Leeds Concert Band.

Matt is a skilled pianist and enjoys to perform wherever he can, although that generally means accompanying one of his school pupils in their music exams! Matt also plays the organ and can regularly be seen at St Mary's R.C. Church, Langho, where he is one of the resident organists.

Matt was recently appointed 'Arranger in Residence' to Darwen Brass because he put his hand up at the wrong time and then had to arrange some hymns!

Matt now teaches at St Augustine's high school in Billington, near Clitheroe. In his spare time he enjoys playing snooker and pool in local leagues and drinking lager.
